Wyman: A 3rd Seahawks DL deserves credit for Reed strip sack, Clowney TD

The best play of the Seahawks’ 27-24 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers could really be any number of highlights for Seattle. Perhaps the most critical, however, was the one that resulted in the Seahawks’ first touchdown.

Clayton’s Observations: Seahawks keep getting gifts from Bill Belichick

It wasn’t an offensive touchdown, either. In the second quarter with Seattle trailing 10-0, star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney scooped up a fumble and ran it back for a score, his second TD of the season. Clowney did a lot of damage for the Seahawks in their victory with a sack, a forced fumble and five quarterback hits, but on this particular play the most important thing was that he was in the right place at the right time.

The fumble Clowney was able to recover was created by defensive tackle Jarran Reed, who was credited with a strip sack of 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo. But under further examination, there was another member of Seattle’s defensive line who had as much to do with creating the opportunities on that play as anybody else: Poona Ford.

In this week’s Football 101 video, former NFL linebacker and current Seahawks Radio Network color commentator Dave Wyman breaks down what Ford did that was crucial in creating Seattle’s first touchdown.

Watch the play in full here.

Before wrapping up the video, Wyman also looks at a pass play broken up by Seattle that shows just how in-sync the different parts of the defense were against San Francisco.

The Seahawks have a bye this weekend but will return on Sunday, Nov. 24 for a 10 a.m. game in Philadelphia against the Eagles. Wyman will be on the radio call alongside play-by-play announcer Steve Raible.
