Wyman: How Seahawks LB Mychal Kendricks made the right read on INT

Oct 29, 2019, 1:44 PM

The Seahawks had a pair of takeaways in the first half of their 27-20 win over the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday, and since one happened on the final play before halftime, the other carried a lot more weight in Seattle’s one-score victory.

DK Metcalf: If you don’t act like a rookie, ‘they won’t treat you like one’

The play in question is linebacker Mychal Kendricks’ interception of Atlanta quarterback Matt Schaub (watch it here), which happened close to the midway point of the second quarter. The Seahawks led 10-0 at the time, and Kendricks’ pick – the fourth of his NFL career and first in two seasons with Seattle – gave the Hawks a short field, opening the door for them to push their lead to 17-0 on a 1-yard Chris Carson TD run.

In this week’s Football 101 video, Seahawks radio color commentator and former NFL linebacker Dave Wyman looks at how Kendricks’ interception came together. There are a few notable things he brings up, including the fact that Schaub decided on throwing on a play that was a run-pass option, or RPO. It’s also interesting to see what Kendricks read from the offensive line to know not to drop back farther to cover star Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones, which left him where he needed to be to make the jump on Schaub’s pass attempt.

The 6-2 Seahawks will continue play next Sunday at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a 1:05 p.m. game. Coverage on 710 ESPN Seattle and KIRO Radio 97.3 FM will begin with the pregame show at 10 a.m., and Wyman will be on the call for the game with play-by-play man Steve Raible.
