Seahawks’ O-line may be just fine with Jamarco Jones, George Fant filling in

The Seahawks played last Sunday in Cleveland without two of their starting offensive linemen – D.J. Fluker at right guard and four-time Pro Bowler Duane Brown at left tackle.

Rost: Three concerns about Seahawks despite 5-1 start

Based on Wednesday’s practice report and comments made by Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll this week, it doesn’t seem like either Fluker or Brown will be back in action this week when the Baltimore Ravens come to CenturyLink Field for a Sunday afternoon game, either. Brown has a lingering bicep injury while Fluker injured his hamstring against the Rams on Oct. 3, and they both completely sat out of practice Wednesday.

Yet when the topic of Brown and Fluker came up Thursday morning on 710 ESPN Seattle’s Danny and Gallant, there wasn’t uneasiness about the situation. That’s because of the play of the two players who have been filling in: George Fant at left tackle and Jamarco Jones, a 2018 fifth-round pick who is essentially a rookie after missing all of last season with an ankle injury, at right guard.

“You hear Pete Carroll talk about Jamarco Jones, he’s pleased,” former Seahawks wide receiver Michael Bumpus said to Danny O’Neil and Paul Gallant during the Blue 42 segment of the show. “George Fant, Pete Carroll says he’s pleased. When you rush for over 100 yards, you protect your quarterback for the most part, you gotta say that those guys are doing a good job.

“It’s really a blessing in disguise. … The good thing about it is these backups are getting reps and they’re performing at a high level.”

Here’s a look at what O’Neil and Gallant each had to say:

Danny O’Neil on Seahawks’ O-line situation

“After neither (Brown or Fluker) practiced (Wednesday) …. that probably means you’re looking at another game of George Fant as well as Jamarco Jones. Between the two of them, I thought Jamarco Jones has looked good to the point where I don’t think it’s a slam dunk that when D.J. Fluker’s back he’ll be the guy that’s playing right guard. … I think they’ve got one of the better backup left tackles in the league in George Fant so I don’t find myself waiting on pins and needles (for Brown or Fluker to return).”

Paul Gallant

“I am with you. Jones has been really good the last couple of weeks. I thought Fant, who had struggles early on (against Cleveland)… got a lot better as the game went on. I don’t know if that translates to the next week, I don’t know if that translates to a couple of weeks, say Duane Brown stays out a long period of time, but with the way that Fant finished the game, I’m actually feeling pretty good about him in particular.”

You can hear O’Neil and Gallant discuss Seattle’s offensive line during the What to Watch For segment in this podcast of Thursday’s show, while Bumpus joins for Blue 42 in this podcast.
