Seahawks gave up 2 straight big plays vs Browns — who was at fault?

Oct 15, 2019, 3:23 PM

In the Seahawks’ 32-28 win over the Browns last Sunday, the defense had an up and down game – and it didn’t get any more down than when they gave up big gains to Cleveland on back-to-back plays to end the first quarter and start the second.

Clayton: If Seahawks are going to win NFC West, pass rush must get going

On the final play of the first quarter, Browns running back Nick Chubb found a hole in the Seahawks’ defense and wasn’t brought down until he had covered 52 yards.

And on the next play after the two teams changed directions, quarterback Baker Mayfield faked a handoff and found tight end Ricky Seals-Jones for a 31-yard touchdown pass that put Cleveland up 20-6 at the time.

By the way, you may remember this two-play sequence from the game as when Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner took it upon himself to get the defense back in line with the use of his “outside” voice.

In Dave Wyman’s latest Football 101 video, the Seahawks radio color commentator, co-host of Bob, Dave and Moore and former NFL linebacker uses these two plays to show the importance of not pointing the finger of blame right away. There’s also some key points made about gap integrity and force for those of you looking for an X’s and O’s explanation.

The 5-1 Seahawks return to play this Sunday at 1:25 p.m. game against a Ravens team that now features both former Seahawks safety Earl Thomas and UW Huskies product Marcus Peters in the secondary. Coverage of the game will be on 710 ESPN Seattle and KIRO Radio 97.3 FM beginning with the pregame show at 10 a.m.
