The Seahawks’ win Sunday in Cleveland may end up being overshadowed by an injury to tight end Will Dissly.

Dissly, who has been enjoying a breakout season in his second year as a pro, went down without contact while running a route in the end zone in the second quarter of Seattle’s 32-28 victory over the Browns. Trainers checked out his left leg, and he was forced out of the game and needed to be carted back to the Seahawks’ locker room.

The news that followed shortly after was about as ominous as it gets with a leg injury to a football player: Out for the rest of the game, Achilles injury.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said in his postgame press conference that Dissly has a “serious” Achilles injury, which most likely means a tear and an end to the UW Huskies product’s season.

This would be the second time in as many years that Dissly’s season was cut short due to injury; he tore his right patellar tendon in Week 4 of the 2018 campaign. Patellar and Achilles tears are considered two of the toughest injuries for football players to come back from.

Dissly entered Sunday’s game with 23 receptions for 262 yards and four touchdowns, having emerged as Seattle’s No. 2 receiving option and a safety blanket of sorts for Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Among tight ends, he ranked first in touchdown receptions, sixth in receiving yards and tied for seventh in receptions in the NFL coming into Week 6.

The Seahawks’ tight end position now looks completely different than when they broke from training camp. Nick Vannett was traded to Pittsburgh, after which Seattle brought back Luke Willson, who was a free agent due to not making the Raiders out of camp. The Seahawks also promoted Jacob Hollister, who they acquired last offseason in a trade with New England, from the practice squad on Friday.

Seattle also has Ed Dickson, who has been on injured reserve following offseason knee surgery. If Dickson is deemed healthy enough, he could return any time after the Seahawks’ Week 8 game against Atlanta on Oct. 27.
