Football 101: Russell Wilson’s historic game and perfect pass to DK Metcalf

Sep 18, 2019, 11:42 AM | Updated: 7:42 pm

A lot has been said about Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson after his huge game in Seattle’s Week 2 win over the Steelers. And for good reason.

Moore: With Russell Wilson, we’re watching a Hall of Famer at his best

Wilson completed 29 of 35 pass attempts for 300 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions and a career-high 82.3 completion percentage. We at 710 ESPN Seattle took to Twitter on Tuesday for help in figuring just how rare those numbers are, and Vincent Verhei of FootballOutsiders.com came through with this pretty telling stat: In the history of the NFL, there have been only 18 times where a quarterback has finished a game with at least 35 pass attempts and a completion percentage of 82.3 or higher.

When you dig into the stat even further, Wilson’s game in Pittsburgh looks even more special. Of those 18 games, only eight times did the QB also throw at least three touchdowns while not throwing an interception. So that class of 35 or more attempts, completion percentage of 82.3 or higher, and at least three touchdowns and no interceptions looks like this:

• Russell Wilson
• Drew Brees (twice)
• Tom Brady (twice)
• Peyton Manning
• Rich Gannon
• Kelly Holcomb

In the latest edition of Dave Wyman’s Football 101, the former NFL linebacker and current Seahawks radio color commentator breaks down Wilson’s huge game, discusses whether stats are for losers and then goes through the X’s and O’s of one of Wilson’s best plays from last Sunday’s Seahawks win, a 28-yard touchdown pass to rookie DK Metcalf.

Seattle will be back in action at home next Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, who will be without the aforementioned Brees due to hand surgery. Radio coverage will begin with the pregame show at 10 a.m. on 710 ESPN Seattle and KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, with kickoff set for 1:25 p.m.
