Seahawks training camp: Day 1 | Day 2 | Clayton’s observations

Let’s take a look at some of the notable highlights, quotes and updates from 710 ESPN Seattle reporters.

Cody Barton turns heads

Rookie linebacker Cody Barton, a third-round selection out of Utah, showed why his name has been coming up a lot this offseason (including by KIRO Radio 97.3 FM’s Gee Scott, a regular contributor on 710 ESPN Seattle) as a player to watch with a spectacular interception.

At the podium

A couple of Seahawks with fresh contracts spoke to the media after practice: DeShawn Shead, the versatile veteran defensive back who returned to Seattle on Saturday, and Bobby Wagner, the All-Pro linebacker who just negotiated his own new deal that makes him the highest-paid player at his position. Head coach Pete Carroll also took some time at the podium. Here are a few key things each person had to say, plus links to full video of each press conference.

Bobby Wagner on being his own agent during contract negotiations: “For me, it was just about education. It was about thinking about life after football because this is not going to last forever. I wanted to challenge myself with something other than football. I felt like this was something that I wanted to do, something I was preparing for, for a long time. I just wanted to challenge myself. Fortunate for me, I got to watch a couple guys do it before me and learn from what they did. This is really just about challenging myself and showing players that it’s an option. For me, it wasn’t about agents and all that stuff. It was about challenging myself and showing players there’s another option and showing players that no matter what you do, whether you have an agent or don’t have an agent, it’s really about educating yourself. Educating yourself in the business that you perform in. We know the statistics, we know that whatever we’ve done, a lot of us tend to go broke or don’t take good care of our money. I feel like it’s because we don’t educate yourself while we are here. We wait until we are done playing football and try to figure it out. This was me trying to educate myself before I get out there in the real world and actually have some real world experiences. Not everybody is going to tell you stuff that you want to hear. You have to be able to handle that. That’s kind of what it was for me.”

DeShawn Shead on how it feels to be back with the Seahawks: “It feels good, it feels good to be back. I was telling everybody I’m back home, I’m back home. So just to be back, a lot of familiar faces, but a lot of faces I don’t know, it’s a whole new team. But still the same feeling of being in Seattle, in Renton/Seattle, so definitely happy to be back on the team. Same feeling, same organization, what I know, got back to my same routine, the plays are a little bit different but the same philosophy, so I’m glad to be back.”

Pete Carroll on the importance of signing Wagner and Russell Wilson to extensions before the season: “Yeah, it’s really important to us. Russ has had a great offseason. He’s come back flying because his mind has been clear and intent and focused, and all that has been on point. And Bobby, this has been a distraction for him, he has to get reset and get back on. He’ll tell you he’s fine, but I do know that he’s dealt with a lot, so we’re going to give him time to make sure he gets his feet on the ground and feels good about everything, really clear. I know he’s really excited, and both guys are at peace obviously and thrilled to be part of this organization. But I respect that a lot has taken place and I want to give Bobby time to get back on track and hopefully he’ll do that quickly.”

Carroll on bringing Shead back:  “A year ago when we worked him out he just wasn’t all, in my opinion knowing him as a young man growing up, no, he wasn’t fully back to the standards that we would expect and we couldn’t come to an agreement then. He came back out here and I’ve been hearing and I’ve seen clips and all kinds of stuff. He did a little bit of a campaign for me to understand what he’s capable of doing. He came out here on the field the other day and he looked great, he looked as good as he’s ever looked. Quick and strong and fit and in shape. He brings us the versatility of playing safety and corner. He can play in the nickel package, he’s an excellent special teams player. Better than that he’s a great competitor, and to have that guy battling here with our young guys and show them what it’s all about will only make us better. So I’m thrilled that he’s back with us and thrilled for him that he was able to get back physically, because he had a serious injury that he played with but only late in the year did he start to pop out of it and really start to gain some confidence that he could do stuff in a normal fashion. Then in the offseason he trained as a guy training for football, not as a rehab guy this year, and you can see the difference. He’s an unbelievable worker so it’s paid off.”
