RENTON – Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Monday that he doesn’t know anything about offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell possibly being a candidate for the opening at Brigham Young University.
“Just that I heard that walking down the hall,” Carroll said when asked if there was any light he could shed on Bevell and BYU. “Is the job open? I didn’t know that.”
BYU has an opening after long-time coach Bronco Mendenhall left earlier this month for Virginia. Bevell’s name was mentioned as a potential replacement by Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports, who noted that he fills one of the university’s requirements as an active member of the LDS Church. Feldman’s column doesn’t state that Bevell is in fact a candidate for the job, just that he suspects the school would consider Bevell.
Bevell has been Seattle’s offensive coordinator since 2011. He has interviewed for NFL head-coaching vacancies in each of the last three offseasons.
“I’ve talked about Bev in the past. He’s a great football coach and he can run the whole thing,” Carroll said. “I don’t know, I don’t even know if he’s interested. I haven’t talked to him or anything. I don’t know anything about it. But he’s a fantastic candidate to be a head coach someday, there’s no question.”
