The future NHL Seattle team has yet to make any official declarations regarding its name or colors, but on Wednesday it may have tipped its hand about the direction it could be going.

NHL Seattle primer: What fans need to know about expansion hockey team

NHLSeattle.com revealed a redesigned website that is now under the official NHL.com umbrella, and along with the new look came a highly interesting color scheme.

Is that a red? Or maybe it’s more of a pink. Like, you could even say it’s the color… salmon. If so, I think it’s safe to say the likelihood of the team being named the Seattle Sockeyes just went through the roof. Sockeyes has long been one of the rumored favorite candidates for the team’s name, along with Totems, Kraken and the sentimental pick, the Metropolitans, the name of the old Seattle pro team that once won the Stanley Cup.

To add fuel to the fire, I pointed this out on Twitter and received a cryptic response from the NHL Seattle account.

As for the other color, it’s something more in line with the greens, blues and teals we are used to seeing from Seattle pro sports teams, though this color does stand out on its own. While it is closer to a teal, it appears to lean more on the blue side of things.

Yes, this is the kind of rumor and innuendo I have been reduced to while counting the days until major league professional hockey finally arrives in Seattle. Now, back to the speculation.

NHL Seattle has been using red in much of its promotional materials for a while now, but this red (or pink) is definitely a little brighter. This is also the first time to my recollection that any red/pink shade been accompanied by the teal color present on the website.

While there is still a lot of time to go and red tape to get through before the NHL Seattle team hits the ice in 2021, one thing we do know for sure is that the team’s name will be revealed by the end of this year, as NHL Seattle CEO Tod Leiweke stated last week. Leiweke also noted late last year on 710 ESPN Seattle’s Danny, Dave and Moore that the team colors could be a surprise, and this color combination would certainly fit that bill.

Worth noting is that NHL Seattle recently conducted a fan survey that included thoughts on potential colors to use, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the group took some cues from the results of that survey and are now testing them online.

Maybe it’s nothing. But if it turns our to be something, I’ll be sure to remind you that I told you so.
