From 1982 to 1999, the LPGA Tour made an annual stop at Meridian Valley Country Club in Kent with the Safeco Classic, featuring stars and champions such as JoAnne Carner, Juli Inkster and Jan Stephenson.

All three will return to the Seattle area this week as part of a strong field in the Suquamish Clearwater Legends Cup at White Horse Golf Club in Kingston. The 36-hole tournament, which starts on Friday, is one of eight events on the LPGA Legends Tour for players 45 years of age and older.

Trish Johnson of England will defend her championship after winning the inaugural Suquamish Clearwater Legends Cup last year by five shots. Among those hoping to hoist the Legends Cup this year are many LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famers, including Jane Blalock, Rosie Jones, Michelle McGann, Liselotte Neumann, Cindy Rarick and Hollis Stacy.

Lara Tennant is one of four amateurs who will play in the tournament. The Portland resident won the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur in Vero Beach, Fla., last October.

Carner will be the sentimental and local favorite, growing up in Kirkland and still playing competitive golf at the age of 80.

One-day tickets are $20, and two-day tickets are $30. Parking is available at Clearwater Casino and Bayside Community Church in Kingston. Shuttles will run from those parking lots as well as the Kingston ferry dock.
