Seahawks Q&A: Bob, Groz and Tom on players who could break out and more

The Seahawks will host their second of four open-to-media OTA practices Wednesday. On Tuesday afternoon, fans responded to 710 ESPN Seattle’s Tom Wassell’s request for questions — and Wassell, along with co-hosts Bob Stelton and Dave Grosby, responded.

What’s Shaquem Griffin’s best chance of making this team?

Here’s what the trio had to say:

Guys who are still on the roster but we haven't seen much out of like Naz, Darboh, Procise, Rasheem, etc. Everyone is talking about the shiny new rookies, but somebody from past drafts is gonna shine this season.

Stelton: “I’m just going to bow out on (Nazair Jones), because I asked that question all last year. I don’t know what was going on last year – he got in the doghouse, he was a healthy scratch. The year before everybody was excited about his potential and what he was going to bring. And he was not only an afterthought, he was just not a thought last year. I don’t know what he did, I don’t know what happened. So what their plans for him are moving forward, I’ve got no clue.”

Grosby: “Of the three, I think (Jones) is the likeliest to get figured out. With (C.J.) Prosise, it’s hard to believe they’ve hung as long with him as they have. Think about, with what they’ve already got at running back, what Prosise would have to do to get some carries.”

Shaquem Griffin was drafted with great fanfare (I screamed when he was drafted) because of his inspiring story and his relationship with his brother. Now he is fighting to make the team. What pressure will the Hawks face to keep him on the roster for non-football reasons?

Stelton: “Nope.”

Grosby: “That’s a simple answer to a simple question. I agree, no, there isn’t. They’d like for him to work out, obviously. They like him as a player. But this is a cutthroat business.”

Stelton: “They’ve gone out of their way to say, ‘We look at players and what they do well, what they can do for us’ – not what they don’t do. How do we make this guy fit? So I think that’s true of any player. They’re going to look at him and say alright, what can this guy do for us, where does he excel on this team, where does he fill a gap on this team, whether it’s special teams, depth, pass rusher, whatever. But I don’t think they feel like they owe it to him. I don’t think they feel like, man, if we cut this guy we’re going to take a beating in the media. They don’t care. They’re putting out the best team possible.”

Stelton: “(Free agent defensive tackle Gerald McCoy) could price himself out of this.”

Grosby: “He might’ve already done it.”

Stelton: “I mean, John Clayton said reports are – take it for what it’s worth – that he’s already received offers in the $11 to $12 million range. Maybe the Seahawks are looking at it going, yeah, we like him, but we don’t like him for that price. I don’t think they’d mind having him; I certainly wouldn’t mind having him.”

Wassell: “They spent their money on pass rushers right now. I can’t see them going after another guy. Can you?”

Grosby: “Not at that price.”

Stelton: “They got (Ezekiel) Ansah, they got (Al) Woods. I don’t know that they’d go big ticket guy like that… it sounds like potentially their price has already been exceeded”

What’s the likelihood of Russell Wilson cracking the Top 3 in MVP votes or winning MVP?

Grosby: “Depends on what they do. If they have a 12-4 season, win the division, go deep into the postseason, he’s got a great shot at it. For him to be a Top 3 guy, it probably requires a season that’s unexpected.”

Wassell: “This team just runs the ball too much. I just don’t see it.”
