Kyle Seager is heading to the All-Star Game after all.
The Mariners third baseman has been added to the American League roster as a replacement for the Blue Jays’ Edwin Encarnacion, MLB announced Monday.
The All-Star nod is a career first for Seager, whose initial exclusion was viewed by many as a snub. He has rebounded from a brutally slow start to the season and is hitting .274 with 13 home runs and 59 RBIs. He ranks second in wins above replacement among AL third basemen.
After the teams were announced Sunday, Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon hinted that either Seager and/or closer Fernando Rodney could be added if someone has to withdraw. That happened when Encarnacion was placed on the disabled list Monday due to a quad strain.
Second baseman Robinson Cano and pitcher Felix Hernandez are the Mariners’ other All-Stars.
