The Seahawks Tuesday hosted their first open-to-media session of OTAs, during which time reporters were offered a two hour glimpse of Seattle’s complete squad – veterans, rookies, and newly-signed free agents.

Seahawks could use Gerald McCoy, but can they get him?

After practice, reporters were able to speak to head coach Pete Carroll, linebacker Bobby Wagner, and quarterback Russell Wilson. Here are a few quick notes from those conversations:

The latest on Bobby Wagner’s contract negotiations

A chance to speak with both Wagner and Carroll provided some additional information about the team’s contract negotiations with the All Pro linebacker, but unsurprisingly, included little detail.

Wagner, who will be representing himself, acknowledged that he’ll be seeking to break the record five-year, $85 million deal inside linebacker C.J. Mosley signed with the Jets in March.

“I mean, the number’s the number, the market’s the market,” Wagner said when asked whether he’s looking for a similar number. “That’s the top linebacker market, so that’s the standard and that is the plan, to break that.”

Carroll hinted that contract talks are, at the very least, continuing.

“There’s been a process of step-by-step and we’re right in stride with the process,” Carroll said. “Bobby’s been great. Everything’s going to come together in time. Everything’s in order and we’re in order of what we want to do and it feels very comfortable and very amicable and all of that. So everything’s going just right.”

Injury updates

Safety Bradley McDougald and running back Chris Carson were among those who sat out Tuesday’s workouts. McDougald underwent knee surgery this offseason, while Carson “had a little bit of work done” on his knee, according to Carroll. The pair will be forced to wait at least a few weeks before they can make a return to the field.

Also among those who won’t play until training camp are defensive tackle Jarran Reed and safety Delano Hill.

“(Reed) is moving well and should be fine, but we just can’t rush that,” Carroll said of the third-year pro, who recently underwent surgery for a sports hernia. “We’ve got to take our time with it.”

Hill is still working up his strength and adding weight after his season-ending hip fracture five months ago.

“He lost a little bit of weight where he had to be inactive, but his weight’s coming back and his strengths coming back,” Carroll said.

Defensive tackle Nazair Jones is dealing with what Carroll described as a “tender knee.”

Defensive end Ziggy Ansah, who signed with Seattle on May 8, will spend the offseason recovering from surgery to repair his shoulder. His timeline will likely be among the longer ones for Seattle’s injured players. Carroll said Ansah has a chance to be ready by the start of the season, but for now, the team is on wait-and-see mode.

“He’s got a long process to get back,” Carroll said. “His attitude is great, he’s working everyday, he’s involved in all phases of everything that’s going on in the training room and with strength and conditioning. It’s just going to take a while. And we don’t know until after the break, until we get to camp really, to see how far along we were able to get him, and then we’ll see what camp tells us.”

Notes

Cornerback Tre Flowers and recently-signed quarterback Geno Smith were absent due to family issues.
