The Mariners made a surprising roster move after Monday’s 2-0 win over the Twins, designating veteran catcher John Buck for assignment.
The move leaves the team without a backup to starting catcher Mike Zunino, creating speculation that Triple-A catcher Jesus Sucre will be called up to take Buck’s spot on the roster. The corresponding move will come Tuesday.
Buck hit .226 with a home run and six RBIs in 27 games for the Mariners this season. The 10-year veteran, who turned 33 on Monday, has played for six teams in his career.
The Mariners have 10 days to trade or release Buck.
