Who is Shane Ray — and is he a fit for the Seahawks?

Still in the hunt for an additional pass rusher to replace the recently-traded Frank Clark, the Seahawks have hosted a number of defensive ends over the past few days. Former Packers outside linebacker Nick Perry was linked to Seattle back in March, while ex-Lions pass rusher Ezekiel “Ziggy” Ansah reportedly had a visit with the team Monday.

Clayton: Free agent DE Ziggy Ansah would be perfect fit for Seahawks

The most recent visiting free agent is former Broncos first-round pick Shane Ray, who will reportedly be in Seattle Friday. How does Ray’s skill set compare to that of Ansah? 710 ESPN Seattle’s Brock Huard explained the difference between the two veterans during his Blue 42 segment of Brock and Salk Friday morning.

“(Ray) is a tougher fit than Ziggy Ansah,” Huard said. “I think with Ziggy Ansah, you can watch his highlights and say in some ways he looks like Frank Clark. He’s 6-6, 260-pounds. He was a top-five pick in the draft. And at times, he humiliates and dominates the people in front of him.

“Shane Ray was also a former first-rounder, but was seen as a little more — at the time — like a Von Miller-type outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. He has to have a little more space, because when it comes to the hand-to-hand combat for edge rushers, he’s a little bit undersized. So, he fell to the bottom of the first round coming out of Missouri. There were also concerns about his foot injury.

“We profiled and talked about him (ahead of the 2015 draft). He’s a twitch guy; a strong guy. Unfortunately, he’s just been injury-riddled in Denver, to the point where they were like, ‘We’re just done. It’s just not going to work out here, you’re too small, with an inability stay healthy consistently.’

“Now, he’s still got a little something. He’s a 6-4 guy at 250 pounds, he knows how to play this game, and he’s a tough dude. He’s just, unfortunately, been so injury-riddled.”

At just 25 years old, Ray is one of the younger members of the pool of former draft picks who remain on the free agent market. He isn’t far-removed from an illustrious performance in college. In his final season at Missouri, Ray racked up 65 tackles and 14.5 sacks, and was a unanimous All-America and SEC Defensive Player of the Year. However, while he was selected by the Broncos in the first round in 2015, his career in Denver was marred by injuries — the most notable was a recurring wrist injury, for which Ray underwent three separate surgeries.

Ray isn’t the only former first-rounder to be hosted by the Seahawks.

“Look at these guys Seattle has been linked to,” Huard said. “Ziggy Ansah was a top-five pick, Shane Ray was a first-round pick, Danny Shelton was a top-15 pick, Ndamukong Suh was a former high first-round pick, Nick Perry was a first-round pick. These are a lot of guys who were a first round pick for a reason back then, because there was a pretty darn unique skill set that either never flourished in the NFL for some — or for others, did, but later burned out. Those are a lot of the players through the doors right now in Seattle.”

Most of these players have also been visiting other teams. Ansah had visits with Baltimore, Buffalo and New Orleans, while Ray has visited with Oakland and Indianapolis.
