Olympic soccer star Hope Solo and Jerramy Stevens tied the knot Tuesday evening after the former Husky and Seahawk was arrested for domestic assault. His bride was named a victim in the police report.
710 ESPN Seattle host and former teammate Brock Huard was just as surprised to hear the pair planned to get married as the rest of us.
Huard said he actually ran into Stevens last week at Sea-Tac Airport on his way home from the East Coast. They got to chatting about life and what Stevens has been up to.
“It’s been a couple years since he played. He still, like a lot of pro-athletes, spent nine years in the league and still doesn’t know what he’s going to do next, but he’s in town to get married.”
Stevens told Huard they weren’t going to go on a honeymoon because his fiance would be on tour, a soccer tour. She is Hope Solo.
Huard said he didn’t spill the beans at work because there’s ‘a code’ amongst teammates. He may have dug deeper had he not been delirious from traveling all day.
While critics wonder why someone like Solo would choose to spend the rest of her life with someone like Stevens, who has a long history of arrests, Huard said he was a great guy on the field.
“If you lined up 100 of his former teammates, as far as how he took care of business on the field, how he handled himself in the huddle, how much he cared about winning, how much he cared about the other teammates…as a football player, he was a tremendous guy.”
Former Seahawks DT Craig Terrill echoed the same thoughts on the Dori Monson Show. “He was stoic, good teammate, he’d come out and play football, joke around, laugh in the locker room, but then you’d hear about these problems that would come up off the field and in his private life.”
Huard said he’s aware Stevens has many demons in his personal life, but he’s not alone.
“I could go through the list of guys that are searching to try to figure out what (they’re) going to do next.”
Huard said he feels horrible about the news of Stevens’ arrest early Monday morning, but he’s hopeful the newlywed will find his way.
“I hope it’s all upwards from here,” said Terrill, doesn’t know about Solo, but said it seems like people with issues gravitate toward each other. “I hope they pull it together.”
