The Seahawks kick off their second preseason game Saturday night against the Chargers in Los Angeles. Seattle dropped its preseason opener to the Colts 19-17, but showed improvements in the run game. And for 710 ESPN Seattle’s Brock Huard, that’s exactly what he wants to see this weekend.
3 Players to watch in Seahawks vs. Chargers
“This is going to be much like preseason game number one, and I’ll stick to it. The headline I want to see the next day is: the commitment to the run game and play-action pass shines,” Huard during his Blue 42 segment of Brock and Salk Friday.
The Seahawks this offseason made clear their intention to return to being a dominant running team. Rookie running back Rashaad Penny (finger) will miss Saturday’s game, but all other running backs should see plenty of carries.
“This is going to be, I think, more of an opportunity for the starters. And that’s not a sexy headline. But I don’t want this team to be sexy; I want this team to be smashmouth and run the football. The Chargers are pretty small – their second-level guys are really small. Their linebackers are some of the smallest in this league. You’re not going to see (Joey) Bosa, because I think he’s still going to be out with a foot injury. However, you’ve got (Brandon) Mebane and Corey Liuget in the middle, and those are two legit guys, plus a good pass-rusher in defensive end Melvin Ingram.
“(But) I want these guys to be run at. I was that downhill run game to get going and I want to see the play-action pass off of it. That’s the headline I want to see Sunday, and I think they’ve got the opportunity to pull it off.”
