With just a few days to go until the MLB trade deadline entering Friday, the Mariners had still been strangely quiet on the transactions front.

Marco Gonzales’ success result of big changes to his repertoire

There have been a few reports of interest in veteran players like Marlins reliever Brad Ziegler, Mets utility infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and Reds starter Matt Harvey, and there was even a rumor involving Mariners first baseman Ryon Healy (which Dipoto shot down Thursday on 710 ESPN Seattle). But until Friday’s move for reliever Sam Tuivailala, the May trade with the Rays for Alex Colomé and Denard Span had been the last major deal pulled off by Dipoto.

So what had been the holdup?

“We are going to be selective in what we do,” Dipoto told Danny, Dave and Moore. “Our involvement has been very consistent. We’ve got specific targets that we’ve been in line with, we have been in touch with just about every team in the league, at least those we know to be sellers. (And) we have positioned ourselves as buyers – I don’t think that’s a secret.”

The big reason Dipoto and company have been quiet is because of the value they’re putting on their resources, and he’s not willing to take too much from the farm system just to pull off a trade.

“Control is important to us – the ability to control players moving forward if we are going to give up what we believe are impact minor league assets or prospect-type assets,” he said. “But we’re also open to renting players if the acquisition cost is tolerable for us.”
