Seattle announced Friday that it has designated Rzepczynski for assignment, clearing the way for fellow left-hander Roenis Elias to be recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.
The 32-year-old Rzepczynski has struggled mightily this year to the tune of a 9.39 ERA and 2.37 WHIP in 18 appearances, covering just 7 2/3 innings of work. Signed to a two-year deal prior to the 2017 season by the Mariners, he had a 4.02 ERA and 1.56 WHIP last year.
Rzepczynski’s last outing was Wednesday in which he gave up two runs on two walks and a hit without recording an out in a 7-6 loss to Texas.
The Mariners have seven days to trade, release or outright the contract of Rzepczynski to the minor leagues.
Elias, 29, returns to the Mariners for the first time since 2015. He was a part of Seattle’s rotation in 2014 and 2015, then sent to Boston as part of the trade that brought Wade Miley to the M’s. He never found his footing with the Red Sox, however, and was re-acquired by the Mariners earlier this season. With Tacoma, Elias went 2-4 with a 4.94 ERA with 27 strikeouts and 12 walks in seven games (six starts).
