The Mariners activated right-handed relief pitcher Dan Altavilla from the disabled list ahead of Game 2 of their doubleheader Saturday in Detroit.
Tigers edge Mariners 4-3 in Game 1 of doubleheader
Altavilla was added as the 26th player for the Mariners, which Major League Baseball affords any team for a second game of a doubleheader. It also meant a roster move was required before Sunday’s series finale against the Tigers; the Mariners optioned fellow reliever Casey Lawrence to Triple-A Tacoma to get the roster back to 25.
The 25-year-old Altavilla was placed on the 10-day DL with right AC joint inflammation on May 1 (retroactive to April 30). He made one rehab appearance with Double-A Arkansas, striking out two in an inning of work Thursday. For the Mariners this season, Altavilla owns a 4.38 ERA with a 2-2 record, four holds, 16 strikeouts and nine walks over 12 1/3 innings.
