Tuesday Rewind: Rizzs relives classic ’97 Apple Cup

Nov 30, 2010, 3:20 PM | Updated: Apr 4, 2011, 7:47 pm

In one of the classic games in the storied history of the Apple Cup, Ryan Leaf led the Cougars to their first-ever Pac-10 title and first Rose Bowl appearance in 67 years in a 41-35 win over their bitter rival Washington, in 1997.

The man who called that historic game from Husky Stadium 13 years ago happened to be none other than long-time Mariners broadcaster Rick Rizzs, who relived the game on Tuesday’s show. “It was alot of fun to be a part of that,” Rizzs said. “It was a heckuva game, especially if you were a Cougar fan.”

Rizzs also reminisced on his career broadcasting high school football in Texas, and the impact Dave Niehaus’ death has had on him personally.

WSU Cougars broadcaster, and former head coach, Jim Walden explained how trash-talking has become a tradition in the week leading up to the annual Apple Cup, and how the Cougs have been able to turn things around as of late.

Tony Softli, NFL analyst for 101 ESPN St. Louis and former Husky, talked about the Rams’ chances of winning the NFC West and gave his take on this year’s version of the Apple Cup.
