Boxing has survived controversial outcomes before.
But, as ESPN.com columnist Franklin McNeil explained during his conversation with “Bob and Groz” on Monday, that was before boxing fans had an alternative sport to turn to.
“When you’d get those bad decisions in the past, it was like, ‘That’s boxing. People want to see fights,'” McNeil said. “Today, that happens, [and] people — especially young people — are going to MMA. MMA is the variable that didn’t exist before.
“That’s where it’s going to hurt boxing because you’ve got a lot of the younger people who are not even tuning in [to boxing] and a lot of older fight fans saying, ‘Let me give this other sport a try.'”
In the video below, Bob Stelton and Dave Grosby discuss the controversial split decision in Saturday’s Manny Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley fight and how they think it will impact boxing.
