Mariners fans hungry for information on the team’s interest in Prince Fielder grabbed on to a John Heyman tweet today.
“@JonHeymanCBS mariners made prince fielder an offer (or at least told him what they’d pay). seattle people love him but said to have $ limits”
Really, nothing new in this other than that the team may or may not have made an offer. We know that talks have been ongoing. Jack Zduriencik told us on the Hot Stove League Show last week that he had had multiple conversations with agent Scott Boras. That was as far as he would go with details. His policy has always been not to comment on free agents and he is not going to comment on the above tweet other than to restate his position on such matters and tell mlb.com that he is “not sure where all this is coming from.”
We know there has been interest all along. It doesn’t appear that a concrete offer has been extended. Yes, there are talks but I would find it hard to believe that at this point of the game Zduriencik is telling Boras exactly what the Mariners’ parameters are. I am sure the Cubs would like to know what they are. As would the Blue Jays and any other team that will take a shot at Fielder. There is a lot of circling going on and perhaps conversations have been taken to another level on the money matter with the Mariners and other clubs but it would appear that negotiations are still in the early stages.
