Wow, I love how people hear what they want to hear at times… Via many text messages and phone calls to my own cell phone it appears that some listeners heard Mike Salk and I declare that Jake Locker would be reversing his word and declaring for the NFL Draft at his Friday Press Conference. Patently Untrue.
I had a few folks call me this morning who had heard some rumblings from some high profile NFL agents about Locker’s decision to stay at the UW. We brought to light the fact that one of Locker’s big fans, Mike Shanahan, is now sitting at #4 in the NFL Draft with the Washington Redskins. As expected, the NFL, its many agents, and many of the league’s coaches and personnel people think very highly of Locker, and Shanahan is high up on that list.
We didn’t question Jake’s integrity. We didn’t question his word or commitment. We certainly never said he was changing his mind and declaring for the draft. We did say, however, that if you see Locker Friday afternoon or some time this offseason, pat him on the back even more because his decision to turn down short term riches is further magnified because of what Shanahan, Snyder and the Redskins could have offered him at #4.
Looking forward to hearing from Locker and Sark Friday and what the two forecast ahead for this year’s recruiting class and 2010. Speaking of that recruiting class, got to watch Nick Montana last weekend in the Under Armor All-American game. I liked a lot of what I saw in his game and I think his frame can add some size and strength. His feel for the game and timing in the passing game will set him apart from many of the freshman entering the college ranks next year.
