Buster Olney joined Brock and Chris Egan today to talk Mariners. Chris first asked Buster with the Mariners 8.5 games back should Mariners fans keep hope? He says there is…
Yes! It is the American League West. They should defiantly keep hope alive. You have Oakland with basically a very weak lineup ah they have gotten a few guys back. They had a nice weekend series against the Giants holding them to the one run. Ah, But that is not a dynamic team and the Angels are certainly not a dynamic team. We still haven’t really seen any signs that they are going to turn around their season. And I think the Texas Rangers are a flawed team. So absolutely if am the Mariners I am waiting till the possible last second to pull the plug and trade Cliff Lee.
Not only does Buster think M’s fans should have hope, he also thinks that the Front Office is ready to make moves to better the team this season:
There is not a lot of indications that their offense is going to get better. But if I were sitting in Jack’s shoes I would go out and I’d add a couple hitters and I’d take a run at it. And then on July 31 at you know 4 o’clock Eastern I would have an idea of what I could get for him (Cliff Lee) and I would pull the trigger at 3:59. But, you know the problem for the Mariners as we have talked about the last couple of few weeks, there are not a lot of teams ready to make a deal to signify they’re prepared to turn over their team. Because the signal it sends to their fans, so that means the Mariners would have you know fewer names to choose from. But, lest their be any doubt, I mean, I talked to 3 GMs last week that said the Mariners are looking.
