Last week Brock Huard debuted the Ultimate Brock Rating, a metric he created to measure a team’s offensive and defensive efficiency.
The five stats used in the calculation:
1. Red Zone Touchdown Percentage
2. 3rd Down Conversion Percentage
3. Turnover Ratio
4. Pass Efficiency Defense (opposing quarterback’s passer rating)
5. Rushing Yards/Attempt Allowed.
To calculate each Pac-10 team’s UBR, take the team’s average ranking (compared to the nine other teams in the conference) in those five stats.
For example, through four games Oregon ranks seventh in the conference in Red Zone Touchdown Percentage, third in 3rd Down Conversion Percentage, first in Turnover Ratio, first in Pass Efficiency Defense and second in Rushing Yards/Attempt Allowed. The sum of those rankings is 14, which divided by five is 2.8. Therefore, Oregon’s UBR is 2.8.
After four weeks, here’s where each Pac-10 team ranks according to their UBR:
1. Stanford 2.4 (4-0 record)
2. Oregon 2.8 (4-0)
3. Arizona 3.8 (4-0)
4. USC 4.6 (4-0)
5. Cal 4.8 (2-2)
6. Oregon State 6.0 (1-2)
7. Washington 6.4 (1-2)
8. Arizona State 6.6 (2-2)
9. UCLA 7.6 (2-2)
10. Washington State 8.8 (1-3)
