ESPN draft analysts Todd McShay and Mel Kiper Jr. discussed on Monday which quarterback prospects have the potential to either be superstars or duds.
In Monday’s Blue 88, Brock explained why he thinks Cam Newton has more boom-or-bust potential than Ryan Mallett:
“Guys with brilliant arms like Ryan Mallett has and a background in football in the system that he played in with (Arkansas coach Bobby) Petrino, those are two advantages that he has over Cam Newton. When you’ve got the arm strength that he has and the size at 6-foot-6, if he can stay somewhat healthy in his career, he’ll probably be one of those guys that sticks around for a long time.
“Cam Newton, on the other hand, I can see him have the highest ceiling of anybody in this crew, that years from now you look back and say, ‘man, he was drafted No. 10 and he should have been the No. 1 pick because he’s a superstar and a phenom and everything else.’ Yet on the flip side, there is such little football behind him, with one year in college in a system that does not translate, with some issues off of the field – being booted out of Florida, going to a junior college, one year at Auburn, the whole (pay-for-play scandal) – a lot of red flags there. So in that conversation, boom or bust, I think Cam Newton is that guy.”
Brock also discussed why potential draftees shouldn’t boycott the Combine and draft and why Peter King is getting flak about the Hall of Fame voting. You can listen to Blue 88 here.
