Mike Carp got caught up in a numbers crunch. One of many OF/1B/DH types on the current roster, there was no place for him to play. This coupled with the fact that he was out of minor-league options made it clear that the writing was on the wall. He most likely would not be with the club much longer.
Last Tuesday Carp was designated for assignment when Joe Saunders needed to be placed on the 40-man roster and today it was announced that he had been traded to the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named or cash.
The Red Sox had shown interest in Carp throughout the winter, but with a DFA most likely looming the need for quick negotiations was hardly pressing. This week they got their opportunity and the deal was made.
In Boston, Carp will compete for one of the final bench positions.
