We kicked off the “The Cactus League Report” with a bang Tuesday night at the Salty Senorita in Peoria. Eric Wedge, Blake Beavan, Michael Morse (above), Taijuan Walker, James Paxton, Erasmo Ramirez and Greg Johns from MLB.com all stopped by to chat on the chilly night.
Podcasts for both hours of the show can be found here and here.
Wedge gave thoughts on what he has seen so far in camp and talked about his daily routine at the complex which begins between 5 and 5:30 a.m. each day. Hard to believe that there are two players who often beat him to the clubhouse. Any guesses as to who they might be? It’s on the podcast.
Beavan talked about what he needs to do to stick in the big leagues and how time in Triple-A last year helped him. Finding better consistency with his changeup is something specific that he is looking to accomplish this spring.
Morse stopped by and said that he enjoys talking to young players who are in a similar situation that he was when he first played for Seattle. He also sang a bit of A-Ha and shared the story of a surprise he found in the clubhouse kitchen during Fanfest.
Walker (left) is also working on a pitch this spring, his curve. Although he has just two professional seasons under his belt he was not shy about saying that making the club out of spring is a goal of his. He said that he feels much more comfortable being in big-league camp this year and he is ready to compete.
Paxton and Ramirez shared Walker’s thoughts on the comfort level this time around in the clubhouse in Peoria. Ramirez also talked about the reception he got when he returned home to Nicaragua. His making the big leagues did not go unnoticed in his country.
Again, if you missed it, the podcasts are linked above. We will have the show every Monday night until Opening Day from 7-9 on 710 ESPN Seattle and we encourage you to stop by if you are lucky enough to be in Peoria.
