Ex-Seahawks OL Ray Roberts: Offense didn’t have one clear voice

A potential issue that tripped up the Seahawks and resulted in offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and offensive line coach Tom Cable being fired Wednesday was that both were essentially trying to do the same job.
That’s one thing that former Seahawks offensive lineman Ray Roberts, currently an analyst on the Seahawks Radio Network, pointed to when he joined 710 ESPN Seattle’s Bob, Groz and Tom in studio on Thursday afternoon.

Reacting to a sound bite of former Seahawks quarterback Jake Heaps talking to Brock and Salk earlier in the day about Seattle’s coaching structure with Bevell and Cable, Roberts said the Seahawks’ situation where the two basically had equal say in the offense was “super unique.” Roberts added that it was something that can result in confusion and division among the offensive players.
“As a player, you’re trying to decide who is the top dog,” Roberts said. “… It’s just like having two quarterbacks. The locker room is going to be split. I don’t care how good of friends they are, I don’t care what player says what, all the company lines – if you’re having to decide between two quarterbacks and you’re playing both of them, there’s division in the locker room. And so in this situation, you have two coaches trying to run one offense. There’s division.”
That also meant sometimes the Seahawks appeared to just be trying to find something that would work rather than sticking to a cohesive game plan.
“Sometimes the Seahawk offense seemed like it was a buffet line,” Roberts said. “‘Let me put some of this on my plate and see if it works.'”
