O’Neil: Wilson can’t save Seahawks | Recap | Photos | Stats

This one hurts. The Seahawks’ playoff position was seriously impacted this week. And even though Russell Wilson didn’t play well, it can’t all be pinned on him. The chain of events started at the end of the first half when Blair Walsh missed a field goal. They had a chance to tie it at 3 and then get the ball back to start the second half. Momentum could have swung right there. After the half, Russell throws a pick, and five plays later the Jags are in the end zone. Throw in bad punt coverage and a multitude of injuries, and it was too much to overcome. Nevertheless, we saw a VALIANT comeback with TD passes to Paul Richardson and Tyler Lockett. The opportunity was there if they could have come up with one more big play. Right now they need health – and a little poise in the final minute. They look like losers when they pull that nonsense, and it happens way too much with this team.

The Seahawks were beaten by Blake Bortles. You read that right. An incredibly mediocre QB in Bortles threw for 268 yards and two TDs with no interceptions against Seattle. More specifically, he went after Byron Maxwell, who had a tough day in coverage. He also had very little pressure to deal with all day as the Hawks’ defense recorded no sacks. On top of that, the Hawks lose Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright to injury, Russell Wilson throws three interceptions, Blair Walsh missed a 38-yard field goal, and Mike Davis (who was having a nice day running the ball) was hurt – again. Germain Ifedi is still committing head-scratching penalties and being beaten on the edge on a pretty regular basis. Throw in some very unnecessary fights/ejections during the kneel-down portion of the game and you’ve got a very disappointing day for the Seahawks, to say the least. We’ll get a great look at their resolve as they welcome the division-leading Rams (who lost to the Eagles) to town next weekend.

Mike Salk of Brock and Salk

The Seahawks showed last week that when they play clean, they can beat anybody – even the league’s best. When they play sloppy, like they did again in Jacksonville, they showed that they can beat themselves. It’s hard to win on the road but it gets exponentially harder with three interceptions, crucial drops, missed field goals, untimely penalties and a back-breaking third-and-11 rushing conversion they allowed late in the game. The path to success is much harder with five missing Pro Bowlers and a horrible missed illegal contact call, but I truly believe the Seahawks can beat anybody when they just play clean. They just didn’t do that against a good Jaguars team, and that isn’t good enough.
