Five days after what Felix Hernandez considered the rockiest start of his career, he faced quite the daunting task – hold down the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants enough for the Mariners to beat the ace on the other side of the field, Madison Bumgarner.
With the pressure on, The King delivered.
Hernandez threw eight shutout innings a 2-0 Mariners win, allowing just four hits, two walks and striking out five. It was exactly the kind of performance Seattle needed, as well, considering World Series MVP Bumgarner (eight innings, two runs, four hits, nine strikeouts) took a perfect game into the fifth inning before yielding a pair of runs in the sixth.
Watch highlights from Hernandez’s dominant outing above.
