Clayton’s Schooled: The life of an NFL general manager with former Tampa Bay GM Mark Dominik
Aug 24, 2017, 8:18 AM
In this week’s edition of Schooled with the Professor, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik joins to discuss the difficulties of being a general manager heading into a final roster cut-down before the regular season.
Dominik details what it would have been like to be Seahawks general manager John Schneider over the weekend after finding out starting left tackle George Fant suffered a season-ending knee injury. He talks about what a GM has to do to prepare for injuries and find out ways of acquiring players to replace those lost to injury. The job isn’t easy.
Dominik goes into great detail taking you through the daily planning and long-planning that is needed to be a good general manager. This year is different. Instead of having two cuts – one to 75 and another to 53 – the NFL has only one cut-down day that follows the final preseason game. Dominik discusses whether this is a good decision or a bad decision by the league. He also discusses how salary cap plays into the roster decisions general managers make during final cuts. He firmly states this is the toughest time of year for a general manager. The GM has to have his head on a swivel and be able to adjust quickly. He also talks about how the good ones have plans to try to add talent to the roster while still making decisions on the final cuts.
Listen to Schooled with the Professor and be educated on the life and times of an NFL general manager.
