The Seahawks began training camp on Sunday. Here are Brock Huard’s observations from Day 1. You can also listen to Huard’s takes on the Seahawks from Monday’s “Brock and Salk” show at this link.
• Russell Wilson weighed in at 208 pounds, which was his weight both in the NFL combine and when he played at Wisconsin in college. It may be a concerted effort to be able to move because there’s not a ton of trust the offensive line will be much better from last season.
• I will be watching the Germain Ifedi/Ethan Pocic battle at right tackle very closely. Pocic is a much more natural all-around lineman than Ifedi, and if he can move people at all in the run game or get to second level, this will be a battle.
More Seahawks training camp coverage
• There is a sense of urgency in this sophomore class, and there should be as they just watched linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis moved and plenty of others not re-signed this offseason. Running back Alex Collins, tight end Nick Vannett and defensive tackle Jarran Reed look like different guys both by eye test and just the way they carry themselves.
• Wide receiver/return man Tyler Lockett failing a physical is not a surprise, but it does make it worth watching his progress. Cyril Grayson is unbelievably twitchy but so raw that it’s hard to imagine him making the 53-man roster. Defense- and run-first teams complete the circle with special teams, and while the Seahawks’ cover units will be better, the special teams without Lockett are not dynamic.
• I really liked them mixing practice up. For years they’ve had the same routine of fundamentals and position-specific drills working up to team periods. That was not the case Sunday and I will be curious to see how much they continue to change things around. This team has been struggled with slow starts in games and this may have been studied in the offseason as a way to mix it up to start faster.
