RENTON – Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Sunday that the team hopes to get a contract extension done soon with strong safety Kam Chancellor, who’s entering the final year of his deal.

“We’ve worked long and hard at that,” Carroll said following the team’s first practice of training camp. “There’s a lot of real positive stuff coming. We’re not quite there yet, but really I think it’s nothing but positive stuff and hopefully we’ll be able to get something done soon – finished soon.”

At the very least, Carroll’s comments gave the clear impression that progress has been made towards an extension since last month, when he said the Seahawks would “very much like to work something out” with Chancellor. Based on how optimistic Carroll sounded Sunday, it seems like something could even be imminent.

Chancellor, 29, is set to make $6.8 million in 2017. He, tight end Jimmy Graham and center Justin Britt are three Seahawks who are candidates for extensions as they each enter the final year of their deal. Recall that when Chancellor held out two years ago, the team said it did not want to renegotiate with players who were under contract for more than one season.

So Chancellor is eligible. The question is whether or not the two sides can find some middle ground on a price. One possible complicating factor there is the five-year, $60 million extension that strong safety Reshad Jones signed earlier this offseason with Miami.

Chancellor would have a strong argument that he’s worth more money than Jones. He’s been the more accomplished player since they entered the league together as fifth-round picks in 2010. But it’s almost impossible to imagine Seattle coming anywhere close to matching the $12 million average of Jones’ contract. Whatever the number ends up being, a shorter deal could make more sense given Chancellor’s age and injury history over the last three seasons.

From the sounds of it, we could find out soon.
