The video above shows highlights of Mariners rookie Mike Montgomery throwing his second straight complete-game shutout and joining some nice company in the process.
Montgomery, acquired in an offseason trade with Tampa Bay for Erasmo Ramirez, took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning and finished with a one-hitter in the Mariners’ 5-0 win over San Diego. He struck out seven and walked four.
According to the Mariners, Montgomery joined Randy Johnson (three times), Mark Langston (twice) and Freddy Garcia (once) as the only pitchers in franchise history to throw consecutive shutouts. He’s the first MLB rookie since 2006 to do so. It was the 11th one-hitter in club history and the first since Jarrod Washburn’s in 2009.
It was only the sixth career start for Montgomery, who turns 26 on Wednesday. He finished June with a 3-2 record and a 1.62 ERA that ranks fifth among all MLB pitchers for the month.
