We’re introducing some of the Mariners’ offseason additions and lesser-known players during spring training. Here’s a look at Danny Hultzen.

Position: Left-handed starting pitcher
Height/weight/age: 6-3/198/25
Hometown: Bethesda, Md.
How acquired: Chosen second overall in the 2011 draft. Hultzen missed the most of the 2013 and 2014 seasons with a torn labrum and rotator cuff.

Interesting story about his hometown: Hultzen isn’t the only notable baseball name from Bethesda. ESPN baseball analyst Tim Kurkjian also hails from the Maryland city. “Every time I see him we talk about Bethesda,” Hultzen said.

Favorite meal made by his dad: In Hultzen’s family, it’s his father who is known as the best person in the kitchen. “My dad is an awesome cook,” he said. Even so, Hultzen has simple needs when he has a hankering for home cooking. “Just plain old spaghetti and tomato sauce. Just good old-fashioned pasta.”

Favorite class in college: As a history major, it’s no surprise that history was Hultzen’s favorite subject. It also makes sense considering the rich history of his old stomping grounds. “I’ve always been interested in the American Revolution and the Civil War and that kind of stuff … Got some historic landmarks (in Maryland), for sure,” he said.

Favorite musical artist: Tim McGraw.

Favorite cartoon as a kid: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”. Leonardo was his favorite.

First purchase he made after signing his pro contract: Hultzen went the selfless route, giving back to his college, the University of Virgina. “I donated some money to UVA,” he said. “Those guys deserved it. They made me the baseball player and the man that I am today.”
