Pete Carroll and the Seahawks have received the phone call that every NFL team hopes get – the one from the nation’s president offering congratulations on winning the Super Bowl.
President Barack Obama made the customary gesture on Tuesday, and it sounds like he was plenty familiar with the world champion Seahawks. Carroll said Obama, a noted sports fan, referred to cornerback Richard Sherman as “Sherm” and quarterback Russell Wilson as “Russ.”
“He knew everybody,” Carroll said Wednesday after the Seahawks completed their Super Bowl celebration. “It was like he’d been watching us for a while.”
The congratulatory phone call also came with an invitation to the White House, as is the custom with championship teams.
“The invitation to go is openly accepted,” Carroll said. “We’ll figure out when that time comes, but our players will be thrilled to do than and to visit with him. That was a real honor.”
