The Mariners have made a bullpen change ahead of the second game of their four-game set in Oakland, recalling right-handed pitcher Chase De Jong from Triple-A Tacoma and optioning fellow righty Dan Altavilla to the Rainiers.
Altavilla has struggled in nine appearances this season. After giving up a three-run home run to Trevor Plouffe in the seventh inning of Thursday’s 9-6 loss to the A’s, Altavilla has a 7.36 ERA and 2.32 WHIP. The 24 year old was converted to the bullpen just last year, but he hasn’t been able to replicate the success of his strong MLB debut in 2016 when he had a 0.73 ERA and 0.97 WHIP in 15 games.

De Jong was acquired via trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers in spring training and made his MLB debut earlier this season, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk in 2/3 innings. With Tacoma, the 23 year old has gone 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA in a pair of starts. He is likely up with the Mariners to provide an extra arm until Steve Cishek comes back from a rehab assignment in the coming days.
De Jong will be uniform for Seattle on Friday night in their 7:07 game on 710 ESPN Seattle. Coverage begins at 6 with the pregame show. Here are the lineups for Game 2 of the Mariners’ series with the A’s.
