Video: Ichiro homers vs Mariners in possible last Safeco Field at-bat

Ichiro has always had a flair for the dramatic.

In potentially his final at-bat in Safeco Field, which was his home stadium when he won the American League MVP award in 2001, broke the single-season hit record in 2004 and piled up the majority of his now 3,033 MLB hits, the former Mariners great sent the crowd into a frenzy with a solo home run into the right field stands, which was dubbed Area 51 when he was with the M’s.

Mariners clinch series win with 10-5 victory over Marlins

It was Ichiro’s first career home run against the Mariners, who he last played for in 2011, when he was traded midseason to the New York Yankees. He has been with the Miami Marlins since the 2015 season.

The three-game series for the Marlins in Seattle was full of salutes to the future Hall of Famer. From a pregame ceremony before Monday’s opener to honor him for hitting the 3,000-hit mark in the majors to a bobblehead giveaway Wednesday and standing ovations every time he came to the plate, it was clear that Seattle fans still have an appreciation for one of the greatest players not just in team history, but baseball as a whole.

You can watch video of the homer with both Mariners broadcast teams’ calls above, or a version with the Marlins call below.

The gap the Mariners are trying to close really isn’t all that big

The Mariners finished 16 games behind the Astros in 2022, but to think that's how big the gap between the two AL West rivals is would be a mistake.
