It didn’t even take a game before the Mariners made their first roster move of the regular season, recalling right-handed pitcher Chase De Jong from Triple-A Tacoma and placing left-handed pitcher Dillon Overton on the paternity list Monday, ahead of their opening day contest in Houston on 710 ESPN Seattle (listen live at 5:10).
The move was hinted at last Friday, as Mariners manager Scott Servais said that Overton would be allowed to be present for the birth of his first child. The paternity list allows players to miss one to three days.
Overton made the team out of spring training as a left-handed option out of the bullpen with the ability to be a spot starter. He made his MLB debut last year with Oakland, going 1-3 with an 11.47 ERA in seven games (five starts). In spring training, he went 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA in 10 appearances (two starts, 25 2/3 innings).
De Jong, 23, was acquired during spring training in a trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers and would be making his MLB debut if he pitches while Overton is on the paternity list. In Cactus League play, he gave up five runs in nine innings.
