Though the Mariners lost 12-2 in Monday’s Cactus League game against the Padres, Seattle saw a few sparkling defensive plays in the infield and outfield.

Jean Segura continued to show that his transition back to shortstop is moving forward, charging and bare-handing a slow chopper in the first inning to throw out Christian Bethancourt.
Two innings later, right fielder Ben Gamel laid out to make a diving catch that robbed Christian Bethancourt of an extra-base hit.
It wasn’t as pretty for the Mariners elsewhere around the diamond. Starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo allowed seven runs on nine hits, including three home runs, in 4 1/3 innings. Meanwhile, the top performers at the plate were Kyle Seager, who singled twice and walked once, and catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, who hit his first home run of the spring.
