Achilles injuries are notoriously tough to recover from, ending football players’ seasons and in most cases threatening their ability to play the next year, too. That’s what made Sidney Jones’ injury at Washington’s pro day earlier this month so heart-wrenching for Huskies fans.

Don’t count Jones out to play as an NFL rookie in 2017, however. He isn’t.

Jones tweeted encouraging news on Tuesday following surgery that his doctor believes he’ll be able to make the field at some point next season.

That should given Jones’ draft stock a shot in the arm, albeit a small one. Before the injury, he was a consensus first-round projection and thought by many to be the best cornerback in a deep draft class. But with the injury wiping out at least most of his 2017 season, he’s now expected to slip to the middle rounds. The silver lining for football fans in Washington, though, is that could make him a target for the Seahawks, who have some need at cornerback and, pre-injury, likely wouldn’t have had a shot at Jones with their first pick at No. 26 overall.
