While the other All-Star players of the Mariners’ offense are off representing their countries in the World Baseball Classic, Kyle Seager has been left in Peoria to hold down things at the ranch, so to speak.
On Tuesday, that meant Seager’s first duty was to get the M’s rolling on their way to a 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox in Cactus League Play.
Seager delivered a solid single to drive in the first run of the game in the first inning (video above), hammering a 3-1 offering by highly-touted White Sox prospect Lucas Giolito into right field to score Leonys Martin. The Mariners ended up batting around in the frame, scoring four runs and chasing Giolito after just 30 pitches. Seattle no doubt enjoyed that offensive explosion after being victim to one by the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday in a 24-3 loss.
The ever-consistent Seager hasn’t had a particularly standout spring, but his .286 average and .375 on-base percentage in 10 games are pretty close to his .278 and .359 marks from the 2016 regular season.
A Mariners player who has been enjoying a standout spring, however, is Mitch Haniger, who had another big day in the win over the White Sox. He went 3 for 4 with a triple, a run scored and even stole third base. He now sports a .444/.500/.806 slash line along with two homers, five doubles, six RBIs and six runs scored. You can watch video of his performance below.
