A pair of Washington state’s finest have been named to the list that recognizes the most outstanding men’s basketball player in the country.

Huskies freshman Markelle Fultz and Gonzaga junior guard Nigel Williams-Goss are among the 20 finalists for the 2017 John R. Wooden Award.

Mandel: All attention is on Husky hoops star, except in Seattle

Fultz has been the lone bright spot on a Huskies team that is 9-14 this season, leading the Pac-12 in scoring at 23.2 points per game, which ranks sixth nationally. He is on pace to post the highest scoring average by a Pac-12 player in 20 years. His 10 games with at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists this season are the most by a Husky player under head coach Lorenzo Romar. He was also named one of 10 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award for the nation’s top point guard of the year in January.

Williams-Goss, who transferred to Gonzaga after two seasons at UW, is averaging 15.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game for the undefeated and top-ranked Bulldogs.

The Wooden Award All-American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner will be announced during the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show on Friday, April 7.
