Seahawks insider Clare Farnsworth joined Kevin in studio today to break down the Edge move, the passing game, and the new zone blocking scheme.
Farnsworth explained the shift to zone blocking, saying, “What you’re doing is going from a man to man defense to a zone defense. So what you’re doing is you’re blocking a zone. The lineman fire out and create gaps in a certain direction…A big part of it is to cut block on the backside, that’s where the biggest gaps come from.”
He also explained why the Seahawks brought in Edgerrin James, saying, “Now there has been more of a trend in the league to go to a two back approach, and Edgerrin James and Jim Mora both touched on that today. But that’s kind of why he’s in here, they want a more complete back to supplement Julius Jones.”
Farnsworth also talked about how the Seahawks will be more of a passing team this year, saying, “The way that Hasselbeck has been working the ball to John Carlson and T.J. Houshmanzadeh in the red zone it wouldn’t be out of the question, especially with Greg Knapp calling the plays, if you get to third and one Hasselbeck may role out and throw the ball.”
