The wife of Bills kicker Dan Carpenter said in a statement released Wednesday that her tweet about Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman was “an attempt at humor” and “never intended to be about race.”
Upset about a play from Monday night’s Seahawks-Bills game in which Sherman collided with her husband on a field-goal attempt, Kaela Carpenter referred to Sherman as an “animal” and implied that he should be castrated, which drew criticism for what could be considered racial overtones as well as general distastefulness.
Her tweet, which has since been deleted, included a picture of a castration tool and the caption: “I know what we do on the farm when a male can’t control his own rage. #LuckyImNotThere #Sherman #ActLikeAnAnimalGetTreatedLike1.”
Sherman responded by tweeting, “Thank you! Have a great day.”
Kaela Carpenter’s statement did not include an apology. It read in full:
“My attempt at humor during a heated and highly controversial NFL game has not been received the way I intended. When I saw the out of control nature of the events that happened on the field, I jokingly wanted to relate it to life on the farm, where I grew up, and how it would have been handled there. Unfortunately, I did not realize that a tone of racism would dominate the response to what I intended to be a lighthearted defense of my husband. Regardless of the narrative that has been attached to my post, it was never intended to be related to race, or the disgusting hatred that creates the basis for racism.”
