The Lingerie Football League is looking for legitimacy, announcing Wednesday it’s changing its name to the Legends Football League in hopes of gaining recognition as a real sport and not just eye candy.

“This is the next step in the maturation of our now global sport. While the Lingerie Football League name has drawn great media attention allowing us to showcase the sport to millions, we have now reached a crossroad of gaining credibility as a sport or continuing to be viewed as a gimmick,” said Mitchell Mortaza, Founder and Chairman of the Lingerie Football League.

Seattle’s LFL team, the Seattle Mist, has been a member of the league since its beginnings in 2009 and enjoyed widespread popularity.

The Lingerie Football League canceled the 2012-13 season. Mortaza earlier said the decision was to take the time to properly brand the game and expand it.

Mortaza said they have hopes to expand to Australia, Europe and Asia.

“In order to reach the next milestone, we feel the focus has to be the sport and our amazing athletes.”

Along with the name change, the league also says there will be changes to logos and uniforms, with removal of sexy female figures, a redesign of shoulder pads for increased safety, and a brand tag change from ‘True Fantasy Football’ to ‘Women of the Gridiron.’ But the women will remain scantily clad.
