Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett is awfully close with his younger brother, Martellus. So much so that mention of the emergency appendectomy that kept Michael in the hospital 20 years ago is enough to bring both men to tears.
The outspoken and quirky Bennett brothers born 16 months apart were featured Wednesday on ESPN’s “E:60” in an episode that included a few poignant moments. Among them was Martellus explaining the heartbreak he felt when his brother’s appendix burst, which required three major operations left 10-year-old Michael in the hospital for four months.
“At that age, we played all the time. Like, I didn’t really have friends because I had my brother. You go to the hospital and you try to get him to play or you know …” Martellus said, stopping for tears. “I wasn’t afraid, I just, I didn’t know. He couldn’t do anything.”
Martellus, a tight end, was traded from the Bears to the Patriots this offseason but not without some speculation that he could join his brother in Seattle. Instead, they’ll face off Nov. 13 when the Patriots host the Seahawks in a Sunday night game.
The pair has never been shy with the media, ripping some of the NFL’s most prominent names, including commissioner Roger Goodell and quarterback Cam Newton, during an interview in August. Martellus, who was a star high-school basketball player, also told a story to ESPN of a time when Michael hung up on legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.
