Series- OSU- 15-4

Last Meeting- 2009- Oregon State 59-50

Seattle jumped out to a 10-5 lead, but their Pac-10 foe
wore down the visitors. Shaun Burl and Michael Wright
paced Seattle with 12 points each. OSU outscored SU 29-22
in the second half to grab the win. Calvin Haynes led all
scorers with 24 points off the bench. These teams have met
three times in the NCAA tournament with Seattle taking two
of those meetings in 1961 and 1962. Oregon State is 11-0
in Corvallis against SU.

Scouting OSU:

New Head Coach Craig Robinson led a remarkable Beaver
turnaround last season. OSU finished the 07-08 campaign
with a 6-25 record overall and a hideous 0-18 mark in Pac-
10 play, but turned their fortunes around last season.
Robinson’s deliberate and efficient brand of basketball
led OSU to an 18-18 record with a 7-11 Pac-10 finish. The
18 victories were the most since Gary Payton snarled the
Beavers to 22 tallies in 89-90. Oregon State punctuated
their season by taking the CBI crown, the first basketball
championship in school history. The Beavers are again
hovering around the .500 mark this season at 6-7 although
their Pac-10 road is off to a rocky start. OSU dropped
close games to UW 76-70 and WSU 65-60 over the weekend.
OSU relies on their stingy 1-3-1 zone that has given
opponents fits all season. Oregon State foes only shoot
41% from the field and 29% from 3 while managing just 60.7
points per game. They are +2.7 rebounding, but turnovers
have been a big problem. The average 16.6 turns per game
and they are not a dangerous team offensively outside of
the paint.

The Ones to Watch:

Seth Tarver- 6’5 210 SR G/F- 12 ppg 5 rbd 2.5 assts

The 4-year Oregon State veteran causes havoc at the head
of the 1-3-1 zone. He is averaging 3 steals a game which
is tied for 3rd in the nation. He is the leading Beaver
scorer, rebounder and assist man. He has been in double-
figures in all but three games this year, but two of those
games were over the weekend. He combined for just 16
points on 6-18 shooting versus UW and WSU. He shoots 52%
from the floor and can be difficult to keep out of the
paint.

Calvin Haynes- 6’2 185 JR G- 12 ppg 2 rbds 2 assts

Haynes can be an explosive scorer at times. He lit Seattle
up for 24 points in the meeting last season and he is
playing his best basketball of the season at this moment.
He is averaging 17 points a game over his last 5 games
including a career high 25 against Fresno State. He is one
of the few Beavers who is dangerous from the outside,
knocking down 44% of his threes. He led Oregon State with
13 points a game last year.

Keys to the Game:

1- SU Shooting %- Seattle is going to have to knock down
shots against the thorny 1-3-1 zone that OSU offers. SU
has routinely struggled against zones this season and this
will be one of the best they see on the season.

2- Chuck Garcia- If Seattle is going to win then big Chuck
must have a monster game.

3- Start strong- Seattle jumped out 10-5 last season
against OSU and gave themselves a chance to the end.
Seattle will struggle to come back if they fall too far
behind this difficult OSU squad.

SU is in need of a win, but playing a Pac-10 team on the
road is not a great recipe to pick one up. Seattle is
going to have to play one of their best games of the
season to taste victory on the road. Tune in 15 minutes
before tip on 710 ESPN Seattle and the live blog will be
cooking at seattleufan.com.
